  1. I’m also interested in the N900. I have seen peopel with it on FOSDEM.
    Three things made me doubt:
    1) It’s quite bulky. It’s not actually a phone, but a computer that you can make phone calls with.
    2) I’d rather wait until the merger between Maemo (Nokia) and Moblin (Intel) into MeeGo is complete.
    3) Package manglement is apparently based on .rpm. I’m a .deb kind of guy.

The bulky part is exactly what made me doubt too..But I’ve walked around with a Netbook before in my bag so why not the N900 with 3G connectivity? I think that I will mostly use it as a mini computer with a 3G connection…We’ll have to see :) Can’t wait to get my hands on it!

  3. Ah well yes, but you are a woman. You have a bag. I don’t. ;-)

Actually, it is 2Gig of application memory ;)
It also has a MircoSD card reader which supports cards up to 32Gig, so you can have 64Gig in total. (officially it only supports cards up to 16Gig, but 32Gig should work also)

  5. Sigrid zegt:

I don’t even know what to do with 64 gig on my phone! How on earth would I find 64 gig of stuff to put on my phone lol
But nice not to be worried about it
I’m a bit scared I’m going to like this thing and then I’ll have to buy it ;)

@sigrid put music on it. *LOTS* of music :) Then add Video, *LOTS* of it. Next add e-books. *LOTS… you get the point ;) it is a dream if you’re on the train for two hours everyday.

Also some cool apps for you to try out:
(important: to install some of these you need to enable the Extras-Testing or even Extras-Devel repositories. These repos contain beta software (extras-testing) or pre-alpha software (extras-devel), and might cause the universe to come to an end, or just brick your phone)
    - Mobile Firefox (Fennec). It is a bit slow but really nice
    - OMWeather: better weather applet than the default imho (and Open Source ;))
    - ATI85: Texas Instruments calculator, like you might have used in school
    - Bounce: A really cool game with wonderful 3D graphics and accelerometer integration
    - Angry Birds: another cool game
    - eCoach: if you run or do any other sports it is really nice to track your route on a map with GPS
    - FBReader: read e-books
    - gPodder: PodCast client
    - Hermes: pull contact info from Facebook and twitter
    - Jamaendo: listen to music from jamendo.com (Creative Commons music)
    - QuickPanorama: this is just COOL
    - QtIrreco: use the N900 as a remote control for your DVD-player, Hi-Fi…
    - Vagalume: listen to last.fm (if you are a subscriber)

    - twitter plugin for contacts and addressbook: this is really cool integration of twitter into your contacts. (extras-devel!)

    - EasyDebian: run a version of Debian on the phone, including OpenOffice.org, IceWeasel (=Firefox, desktop edition), etc. übergeek :)

  7. Sigrid zegt:

Oeh, thanks for the great tips ;) I’ll have to wait/see about installing beta software etc. till I have my own N900 (if I want one that is :) Can’t brick a test phone, can I? ^^

  8. teranex zegt:

Until now i have not managed to brick mine with the mentioned software ;)

Oh BTW, also really cool (and Ubergeek :p) is to install OpenSSH on the N900. Then figure out it’s IP address (xterm: ‘root’, ‘ifconfig’).
(IIRC: During the installation of OpenSSH it asks to set a password for root. I believe i did not do that, however i changed the password for ‘user’, since i don’t want to use SSH with full root access all the time.)

Now on your computer you can connect to the shell of your N900 and execute commands on it with a real keyboard:
$ ssh user@192.168.1.123 (if that’s its ip address)
Also (on Linux and Mac) you can mount the N900:
    $ sshfs user@192.168.1.123: /media/n900
And now you can copy files to it over the wireless :)
