The Race of a Lifetime

When I heard about this book a couple of weeks ago, I instantly tried to find it on my Kindle. Unfortunately it wasn't available in the European Kindle store (damn you, publisher restrictions!). That evening I told my sweetie about the interview I had seen with the authors of the book. "Did you know Hillary Clinton might have lost the nomination because Bill was getting it on again with other women?!" For me, this was stunning since I always preferred Hilary Clinton over Barack Obama during the presidential race.

But as we all know, Hilary quickly limped behind and wasn't able to secure the Democratic nomination. A book that  supposedly tells the story of this interesting 'race of a lifetime' instantly made me want to run to a bookstore and find it. It wouldn't be at my local store though since it was only recently published in the US. Imagine my surprise yesterday afternoon when I suddenly spotted a copy of the book at Fnac. I had been wondering around in the bookstore for over an hour and was contemplating which books to buy (if any). My heart stopped for just a second and I cheered when I pulled 'Race of a lifetime' off the shelf. 15 minutes later I was racing home, ready to get settled and start reading my new treasure. (Sorry Kindle, I did try reading it on you first, you know...)

Now, 24 hours later, I've only read a few chapters but I am in love with this book! I have a soft spot for books written based on research by journalists but with the narration of a novel. 'The one percent doctrine' by Ron Suskind was such a book and I hadn't found anything like that since then. But 'Race of a lifetime' reminds me of a novel so much at certain points that I have to remind myself this story is based on facts and hundreds of interviews. Either way, I am enjoying it very much. If you followed the amazing, stunning presidential race in 2008 and are interested in American politics overall, this is a book you'll want to read. You'll have to find it first though ;)

PS: I do admit it's nice to hold a 'real' book again after reading several on my Kindle. However, I miss Kindle's fantastic option to enlarge the text font. So bedtime reading (without glasses) is still Kindle's territory!
