Has anyone tried this yet on the Milestone offered by Telus? It comes with 2.0.1 but I wonder if there is something about the update.zip that might be specific to the european Milestone.

    • Sigrid zegt:

Hmmm I honestly dont know. The Droid and Milestone use the same update.zip , I think, but you never know what Motorola did…Id wait for some more info if I were you. Ill keep an eye on it and if I find something Ill post it here

    • Sigrid zegt:

Ok. Im only finding reports of rooting not being available for the Telus Milestone right now. The OS probably is different and might not have the same loop holes to use for rooting. As soon I hear about a Telus Milestone with root I’ll post the method!

  2. charrion zegt:

Thanks, I’ll keep scouring the intarwebs myself. But you’re right, there seems to be a difference between the Telus Milestone and the others. Of course, it doesn’t help that there are only a small number of us who have managed to get their grubby little hands on a Telus Milestone so far.

  3. Dalc zegt:

    Hey there,

I’ve been scouring since I got it earlier today…

It’s a pretty good device. Going to take some getting used to as i’m coming from a bb pearl and was the short cut master.

I want total and complete control!!!

    • Sigrid zegt:

Did you get the Telus one? Ive been thinking about trying out a BB again but I can’t imagine it being better since I’m rather content about the email functions on the Milestone. Why did you choose the Milestone today? Enjoy your new phone :)

  4. dalc zegt:

    Hey sig,

I got the milestone cuz I can’t stand iphone fucktards and their one button love. Like many I was looking for the pimpest, most malleable device out there. With no n900 love from the big three on the horizon, I thought the droid/milestone was the next best thing.

Alas we are looking for the next best thing. With a great platfor/device like the milestone/droid, its hard not to want more. I’ve installed a ton of apps. Yes I have the milestone from telus. The best way I’ve fou nd is using AndExplorer and then just goinh to town on the thin. Performance could be about 20% better hence our collective desire to root root root!! But seriously, I dled a 8 meg file off the new network in about 30 secs… very impressive.

    Nerds unite!

Here you can find why the Telus can not be rooted (so far, I hope): http://alldroid.org/viewtopic.php?f=259&t=2498
The version is different. I really hope someone find a way to bypass that or Motorola to change its stupid behavior.

  7. charrion zegt:

For anyone curious what happens if you try this on your Telus Milestone; I gave it a shot myself.

Sadly, I get the following error:
E: EOCD Marker occurs after start of EOCD
    E: Signature verification failed
    Installation aborted.

IIRC, this means the zip file is not signed correctly for recovery to flash it. We either need the correct signing file or hope for an exploit to be discovered to bypass or fool the signature check.

  8. Sigrid zegt:

Hey! Thx for the brave experiment! I wrote a separate post about it on my blog so everyone ‘ll see it!

    Hi
I’m using a Milestone which was imported from the UK. I tried to run the update.zip and root the device but it didn’t work. Got an error: installation aborted.

    Maybe anyone can help me?

  11. Sigrid zegt:

    Hey Daniel,

That’s weird…Is the device branded or is the software branded in any way? Have you tried redownloading the update.zip and using a new file to run the installation? There’s a small chance something is wrong with the file…(you can always try) I found a link to the zip file on another site specifically talking about the UK device, try this zip http://www.sera-apps.de/milestone_root.zip

  23. Sigrid zegt:

    Hey David,

What Android version is on the device? The update.zip usually doesn’t work with 2.1

  24. Jakob G zegt:

So.. Im just about to root my Milestone from UK – so which ROM is safest? It’s a 2.0 Android (but maybe I should update firmware 2.0.1) – all this to get wifi tethering to work.. ufff..

    • Sigrid zegt:

You dont need a ROM, just the update.zip from the guide
Follow the steps and you should be fine
I updated my Milestone to 2.0.1 first znd then rooted Be very careful not to install 2.1 since that one cannot be rooted afterwards

  25. Meska zegt:

Ok, i have a question :) I’ve got UK Milestone with 2.0.1. If i root it now, can i install 2.1 update when it comes out?
So far i’ve been happy with free apps, but what annoys me, is that stupid Motonav software, which takes a lot of space, on SD card, and on my phone, and does no have my country maps…

    • Sigrid zegt:

Yes, you should be able to install the update later :) It’s possible to keep your root then but you have to look up how to do that before you install 2.1!
