Thanks for the guide, lucky I’m in the UK so I don’t have to worry about the keyboard but would I lose root doing this?

    • Sigrid zegt:

You might actually. If you havent rooted your device you will not be able to use the update.zip after this. You d have to flash your 2.0.1 back on the device to get root back
If its rooted already it might hold up
I guess you could make a nandroid back up of your current rom and settings
Then update your phone and still have root :)
If not, flash 2.0.1 on there, root it and reinstall your backup? :)

    • Sigrid zegt:

If you try, let me know what happened!

  2. Carl Robinson zegt:

I was reading on Androidworld.nl and it does seem you lose root doing it, I have found away of getting 2.1 with root on Modaco you update it via nandroid backup. I’ve not tired it myself though. Bit worried bricking my Milestone especially as I’ve had it less than a week lol.

    • Sigrid zegt:

Unless you have some cash laying around for a new one I d choose between root and 2.1 for now then ;) I havent seen much bricking with any Android devices but you never know of course. You dont want to be the guy that found out it can happen ;)

  3. Carl Robinson zegt:

I managed to brick a G1 once :P but that was my own fault when upgrading the radio. I never bricked my Hero and I was flashing that pretty much everyday with a new rom :) I don’t have the money for a new Milestone so I think I’ll stick on 2.0.1 for now with root :)

  4. Frad zegt:

Hi sigrid… I started following your site due to your extensive coverage of the whole Telus milestone locked bootloader fiasco. Few sites covered the issue as thoroughly as you did. Thanks for that!

Do you have any idea if this update will work on our Telus milestones? It is an official Motorola ROM so it should be signed properly and all….at least I think so.

Hope you still stay as a voice for us remaining Telus milestone owners out there. You really helped bring attention to the issue.

    • Sigrid zegt:

      Hey!

      Thx for your comment :)
Im afraid you will not be able to use this rom because of the different radio’s. Dont try it, this is the stuff that can render your phone useless. Im going to see if I can get Charrion on here. He’s a bit more techy and can probably explain to you why exactly this wouldnt work

  5. Charrion zegt:

    Charrion here,
I haven’t tried this method out myself because I’ve been reluctant to use the current rooting method of flashing the Brazilian sbf.
That being said, if you have already rooted your Telus Milestone using that method I’m reasonably sure that the Nexus One “rom” is safe.
I had a look through the update package and it is not really a rom so much as a scripted mod. It doesn’t touch the radio, boot, kernel, or bootloader (so far, only official sbfs can do that). What it does is bring some of the 2.0.1 compatible 2.1 apps over, copies the look and feel of N1 (live wallpapers, 3D launcher, etc.) and makes some changes to the build.prop file so that the phone “appears” to be 2.1.
If things don’t work out, you can always just reflash the Brazilian sbf and re-root.
There may be some performance improvements due to the apks, but this is not really 2.1.
Also one quick caveat, this update package includes a different apns-config.xml that DOESN’T have the Telus APN in it. Make sure you backup your APN info before trying this mod.
And if you’re not comfortable with rooting the Telus Milestone with the Brazilian sbf don’t bother with this rom, it will not flash unless you have that rom loaded first.

  6. Charrion zegt:

Quick note on my comment above:

DO NOT under any circumstances flash any sbf other than the Brazilian one on your Telus Milestone. The european roms all use different 3G bands from Canada and you can either brick your phone or render it incapable of communicating in Canada.

If at all unsure, I would advise against this for the Telus Milestone.

    Thar be dragons here ;)

  7. Samer zegt:

    To keep the root:

install the top image as is shown

    THEN flash this using RDS
    http://e1.simplecdn.net/ul.nodch/SHOLS_U2_01.14.0_recovery_only.zip

    THEn install this update
    http://e1.simplecdn.net/ul.nodch/update.zip

  8. Frad zegt:

Thanks sigrid… yes I should have realized the frequencies were different. Lets hope a 2.1 update comes out for a Milestone on this hemisphere! :)

  9. Do I need horrible Windows for this, or can I do this on any regular Linux?

  10. Aaaaargh!
My house is becoming haunted. First the mrs with her Evil Eye Phone, and now this. I wish I knew before I bought your Milestone. :-p
    (just kidding)

  11. Maqubex zegt:

I’m kind of a newbie at this.
I was an idiot to not read the comments before following your instructions.
I updated my Telus Motorola Milestone using your method.
Only diffrence is, I used the .sbf file which gsmarena claimed was the official 2.1 update for milestone.
    http://www.gsmarena.com/android_21_goes_to_motorola_milestone_overtheair-news-1544.php

There’s a link for the file there and I used your steps to install that sbf file.
And now, it’s not detecting the network.
And I didn’t backup any APN files cause I didn’t even know what APN was.
I was too impatient. Idiot that I am.
Anyways, you think I could use the Brazil .sbf file and root it so that it works on Telus again?
Please don’t say that my phone is bricked…:(

    • Sigrid zegt:

Hrm…That sounds like trouble! So basically you flashed a European ROM on your Canadian Milestone? I forwarded your comment to Charrion, hopefully he’ll look into it too. Sorry I didn’t specifically mention the Telus Milestone in the post. (I guess you guys have a QWERTY keyboard too?) Your options would be: finding a Telus Milestone .sbf somewhere or indeed use the Brazilian method I guess..This should at least get your Milestone going again for daily usage but it’s not a complete fix. I’ll keep looking into this and hopefully Charrion will too…If you’re not getting any network I’d go for the Brazilian one..If you do get cellular network but just not mobile internet, hold your horses! You just have to find out your Telus APN then…

    • Sigrid zegt:

If it’s just your data not working but if you have a network connection you might find some help here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4897152&postcount=14

An APN is just the settings to access mobile internet…But you do need to have a network connection.. It has to see Telus

  12. MaqubeX zegt:

The stupid gsmarena site was so deceptive. Saying that I can manually install the official update by myself. It didn’t say specifically for UK or anything like that.
I should’ve known better. Gone are the days when carriers allowed phones to be updated without interfering.
The thing is, I have all the features of Android 2.1
Including the Office, camera, 9 home screens, etc. But, I definitely feel that my phone is slower than before. Esp after loading the live wallpapers. And my firmware version says Android 2.1 update 1.
It just doesn’t detect Telus network at all.
It detected Wind mobile. So, what must’ve happened is, the bandwidth of the operation of the phone must’ve set. I have to find a way to set it to detect Telus bandwidths.
I don’t think the phone has any more problems. Worst coming to worst, when Telus releases it’s update, I’ll just load that .sbf file and pray that it starts working again.

  13. Moe zegt:

Why it doesn’t work on the Telus milestones?

  14. ben millen zegt:

unfortunatly i keep getting flash failed when i try this on my uk one :(

  15. Sigrid zegt:

The European and Canadian phones have different ‘radio’s’ meaning the technology to access a network is different. Without the right software radio you cannot connect to the cellular network

  16. Sigrid zegt:

@ben millen Weird! Haven’t heard that before…Uhmmm..you do see the device in RDSLite? Do you get an instant error or after a while? If it’s after a while your file might be corrupted and you could try redownloading it (delete the first one so you don’t mix em up) and then try again!

  17. Sigrid zegt:

@Muqubex I’d probablty flash the Brazlian ROM if I were you…At least it’ll make your phone work again…And I guess chances are at least higher for you to be updating easily later since it’s already the same radio…

  18. Owen zegt:

Hello, Just wondering if anyone knows if the Verizon Android update will work or the Telus milestone?

    Link Below.

    http://www.androidcentral.com/how-manually-update-your-droid-android-21

    Much appricated!

  19. Ben Millen zegt:

hiya in rds it notices a device is connected however doesnt show the imei or other details, dunno if thats normal of not, and the error occurs pretty quickly

  20. Maqubex zegt:

    Hey Sigrid,
Flashed the phone with the Brazilian Rom.
    Everything’s back to usual.
Just waiting for the stupid Canadian Rom which has been delayed as of March 30th.
I love the fact that Google synced my contacts perfectly. Including contacts which had phone numbers only which I had initially thought to have saved on my sim card and hence, lost…

    • Sigrid zegt:

That’s great news! Now let’s hope Motorola releases a Canadian ROM soon. I’d advice you to update manually because your phone might try staying Brazilian ;)

  21. Owen zegt:

Ok, I did the THAI 2.1 updated and everything works on the Telus Milestone (Unlocked on Rogers).

I used RSD to flash the unit and 3G+ is working with no issues on Rogers once I put the APN info in, also noted that the device saw the Wind Mobile service, does this software included support for 2100 MHz aswell?

  22. ben millen zegt:

Hey Sigrid, big thanks, re-downloading the file worked, and im now updated, didnt know it was gonna uninstall everything, good job i use my backup pro

    Thank you :) x

  23. avery zegt:

ive tried this once and it said said flash failed….all other times the rsd could find the rom when i opened it up to flash it…..do i need to rename it or something…..also it has nothing but the boot version up…..no imei or anything

  24. avery zegt:

k..yeah im doin that now…..the time i got the closest was when i renamed it update.zip otherwise the program cant even find it but i tryin again now

    • Sigrid zegt:

I dont think you have to rename it but if it helps why not I guess
I just downloaded the .sbf file on desktop, connected phone to rdslite and selected phone and rom, went fine

  25. avery zegt:

lol it absolutely refuses to find it lol

  26. avery zegt:

gonna try downloading it one more time

  27. avery zegt:

yeah…….it don show up in the rsd files…..i always have to be the difficult one lol

    • Sigrid zegt:

Thats weird, it should see it…. I really dont get it…. Is the .sbf file on your desktop? Then open it from the rsd ? Does it at least see your phone? What kind of Milestone did you say you have?

  28. avery zegt:

i have one thats based italy…..and not really see my phone….all it see is my bootloader version

  29. avery zegt:

it is a gsm version……might be the browser

  30. avery zegt:

yeah it jus keeps saying it up to date……i might have found the problem. i was using firefox…..jus started with ie went back opened rsd and started typing the first few letters of the file and it showed up…..now if the start would jus go bold so i could click start lol

    • Sigrid zegt:

Euhm…. Why are you using a browser? :) you dont need a browser except for downloading the files…. Rsd lite is a stand alone software to Flash rom on your milestone…

  31. avery zegt:

yeah…..i was using firefox…….to download it so i could use it….think it was doin an autoprotect…..everything startin to come together a lil closer now…

  32. avery zegt:

everything worked……except it flash failed lol

  33. avery zegt:

maybe not……seen someone had same problem and had to change something in it but owell…lol that much closer unless i get an update notice which maybe a while for U.S. lol running a milestone on att network…..and everyone told me it couldn be done…hahahaha thanks though :) :D

  34. avery zegt:

and i keep lookin on here in case you find out what happening

  35. avery zegt:

no i didn know there was one

  36. avery zegt:

o well…..bout be busy enough without messing up my phone…..need my link to weather service here so i better leave it alone so im not storm chasin without a phone lol, and like you said i prolly be gettin it before long anyway…..thanks

  37. michael zegt:

hi..my phone (Motorola Milestone) updated already from 2.0.1 to 2.1 (-update 1)but some features are missing?

  38. Sagastume zegt:

    I use for 3G the 850Mhz Band
and when I did de upgrade using the SBF file posted here (the European version) I lost the 3G conectivity, also in 2G I am experience poor signal quality.

I will try the Thai Version, but if it doesnt work in 3G in 850Mhz, I will have to Roll Back the upgrade and Install again the Android version 2.0.1 for Brazil

  39. C. R. Zamana zegt:

    Hi!

The Thai version works OK in Brazil, with VIVO and TIM, at least.

  40. Leeks zegt:

    Hi Sigrid,

I just “rooted” my Milestone (Singapore, Starhub ROM) a few weeks ago. And I still couldn’t remove the annoying service provider’s logo at startup (although I did change the boot animation to goodole Droid eyes).

I was hoping to use your method to flash my milestone (currently on 2.1update-1 which I assume is the Starhub ROM) to remove the logo.

I’ll use Samer’s suggested guides to retain the root (fingers crossed)

Do you think that is possible?

  41. I flashed my (ex-yours) Milestone a couple of days ago to 2.1. It went smooth, but then I got a very annoying issue with it asking for a password, because I had configured an Exchange acccount on it.
I found a workaround, but didn’t have time to implement it, so I flashed it back to 2.01. After that I got errors every time I started the camera or the market, but I solved that by resetting it to factory default.

Now I have only configured a Google account. I will flash it to 2.1, root it, see what happens and post back in the comments.

  42. Flashing went perfect! :-)
I now have a better camera app, quickoffice, moto car, dutch interface and 5 screens (configurable up to 9)
Although having Dutch is nice for me as a native speaker, I still prefer English.
The next thing I’ll do is reset to factory defaults. Yes I know that this isn’t really needed, but I want the “out of the box” experience of the new firmware. Anywayz that is my standard operating procedure for any other flashable device that I have (like routers etc)

  43. Dejan zegt:

Has this worked for anyone with a UK Milestone?
Looking at this list of ROMS it doesn’t appear a UK 2.1 version is available
    http://and-developers.com/motorola_milestone:sbf

  44. Dejan zegt:

I can confirm this worked with my unbranded UK milestone.. Thanks for the article, much appreciated!

  45. Matthew zegt:

    Hey Charrion,

You seem quite knowledgeable on the Telus Milestone so I hope you can help me with mine. As this forum states the 2.1 for Telus was held back but has now been released right on Motorola’s website. So I downloaded the Motorola Software Updater and plugged in my phone. The software recognized my phone and said an update was available. It proceeded to install the newest 2.1 and said it finished successfully. However now my phone is stuck at the bootloader screen (v90.74) and will not boot into the OS no matter how I try and power up the device. Tried the Camera/Power button, and booting without SIM/SD nothing will bring up the OS.

I called Motorola right after this happened and the girl on the line said that because I didn’t do it OTA the update was not available for my phone, to which I replied I got the update from their software and website but she stuck to her theory of it not being the “right” one.

  46. darren zegt:

Hey. Then what;s the use of the motorola updater which u ask us to have? do i need to activate them ?

  47. darren zegt:

so, is it ok for me to leave out the motorola update and make do with just the .sbf file ? =D
